The start of my athletic life being returned to me Having been involved in weight training and athletics my whole life I was perplexed when I woke up one morning to find I could not move my neck. Just two months earlier I had encountered pain running down my leg. I thought to myself, this should not be happening to me, this only happens to people that don't take care of themselves and don't workout.
Over the next couple of years I visited Chiropractors, Massage Therapists and Physical Therapists. Eventually I would feel better only to have my symptoms reappear. Eventually the pain became chronic which prohibited me from participating in activities with my children as well with as the sports I still loved to play.
I was given a prescription for another visit to Physical Therapy where I met Michael Stare. Mike's specialty was not only in Physical Therapy, but he was a true expert in the biomechanics of the body. This was the start of my athletic life being returned to me.
Mike not only rehabbed my injuries, but put me through intense training sessions which corrected the imbalances in my body, thus limiting the possibilities of future injuries. Mike taught me how to train correctly and how to develop the patience to deal with minor setbacks instead of taking various drastic measures, which could in turn develop into major setbacks. I learned there was no instant cure and in time most strains and injuries would get better when I followed his advice. I am now playing various sports with my children and looking to join an adult ski racing program.

For me, Christmas is early this year
I had my doctor’s appointment yesterday and things went very well. My mission
was to lower blood sugar etc and make every effort to stay OFF drugs. The

weight loss I was able to do this. All this in the worst weigh gaining time

This is the longest I have stayed focused I have struggled with getting weight off and keeping it off all my life. Sometimes I would exercise for a stretch of time and not be eating well, other times I would be eating well and not exercising, and there were even times when I was doing both, but when I didn't see results quickly the efforts would fade.
Two of my friends asked me if I wanted to join these group workouts with them and being as self conscious as I am I was a hesitant, but clearly I wasn't being successful going it alone and my goal was set. I met with Michael to discuss the program and left nervous (could I do the workout?), but excited to start. The only part I wasn't willing to do was have measurements taken because they disgust me, not motivate me. My measurements still disgust me, but I am now ready to let Michael take them - that's trust!
My focus is total body health, and establishing a lifestyle of healthy habits. Because I have been working with Spectrum Fitness and my two friends, this is the longest I have stayed focused and the healthiest habits I have had! I've got to tell you, the buddy system, having pre-fixed work out dates plus keeping and then knowing food logs are going to be analyzed is key!
No matter how challenging your work day is, it will always end on a positive note if you end it at Spectrum Fitness. When you walk in the door to SF you are always told how great it is to see you! Then for the next hour, through the whole workout, you are encouraged and supported. As sweat literally drips from your body and you try to catch your breath we find a way to make one another laugh and then one of us always pushes the group to the next level of intervals! We take 3 minutes to cool down and realize we aren't going to die; we survived another workout! The session ends with the trainer's positive parting words, by that time who can remember the challenging day?!
I can't tell you any changes in measurements to show my progress, but I can tell you that I could only plank for 15 seconds, and now I can plank for 45 seconds, in fact I have planked for a minute twice! I now do lunges and squats with weights, I have progressed from 10 to 15 pound weights. I can finally do pull downs with 70 pounds, and the bar has been lowered for pushups, some day I will do them on the floor! We are at 15 intervals and climbing to 20 fast! We look back at our first workout, only 4 intervals, and laugh! Kathleen

I've never felt better in my life As a 57 year old man that rarely did any exercise, I must say that at the end of my, two day a week, eight week fitness training program at Spectrum Fitness consulting I've never felt better in my life. I lost over 10 pounds of fat and all my clothes now actually fit and are very comfortable to wear. I was evaluated at the beginning by Mike Stare and then at the at the end and I could really see and feel the difference. His expertise in this field of fitness was quite apparent after briefly talking to him. My mental health has improved markedly and my stress level is much lower. The nutrition information I got from Spectrum has dramatically changed the way I eat and I am much more aware of the things I eat and when I eat them and in what combination.
The personal attention I received from Tom and Michelle during the workouts helped me learn the right techniques for the different exercises that we did at every session. I told them at the beginning that I wanted to learn the techniques so that I could do them at home as I have little time to go to a gym. I now can do the same the workout at home that I did at Spectrum (unfortunately without the encouragement from Tom and Michelle that they constantly gave me during the workouts, usually with much humor). Let there be no mistake, they worked me hard, and at the beginning my body said no more, but I kept coming back because of how good I felt after the workouts.
From my observations of their work with other people, who were in the gym at the same time I was, I could see that Mike, Tom and Michelle tailored the workouts based on the individual needs of the client and always with encouragement and positive reinforcement.

In a nutshell, empowering This summer, after months of physical therapy following serious shoulder surgery, I had the gift of working with the trainers at Spectrum Fitness. Over the course of several weeks I learned how to conduct safe exercise routines and I began to regain my strength.
Because I had a lot of apprehension about resuming my physical exercise (outside of the physical therapy venue) it was important for me to work with knowledgeable professionals. After experiencing a lot of pain over the last years of my life and experiencing the subsequent surgery, I realized I needed some up-to-date education as well as to feel safe.
I learned about proper form and when I had pain while performing the prescribed exercises I was taught how to modify my position. Happily, I gained strength pretty quickly and am now working out on my own with renewed confidence.
In addition to the regular exercise program, I was asked to keep a food journal which resulted in more self-awareness about what I was eating. Helpful suggestions were made so that I could begin to incorporate some positive adjustments to my diet. Although none of this is easy, it was made less challenging when showing up week to week to talk about progress, review questions and receive a pat on the back.
This informed practice at Spectrum Fitness is incredibly valuable, especially for those of us who have experienced injury or surgery. I can sincerely recommend these services to anyone needing solid fitness education in tandem with confident guidance. It is, in a nutshell, empowering. Diane Ayott

No More New Year's Resolutions
I knew I had to make changes, and Mike came alongside with the information, plan, and accountability to make it happen. In just a couple months of proper eating and light exercise, my cholesterol dropped by 40 points. I am still with the program, still making progress, and probably approaching the best health and fitness of my life.
However, Mike and his team are not just health and fitness trainers. They are really educators. They teach you how to establish and maintain a healthy approach to life, not in order to make you dependent on them and their facility, but to instill in you the principles and practices of good health so that you can make them part of your daily routines for a lifetime. That is the difference between the Spectrum Fitness Consulting team and most other businesses or health and fitness clubs that are out there.

I would pay three times the amount!
I was the type of guy who went to the gym and looked at other people working with trainers and just thought that they were wasting their money. I kept doing my own thing over and over again, pushing the weights, and was hurting my body more than I realized. My doctor told me if I kept treating my body this way I wouldn’t be able to walk by the time I was 40.
Spectrum has mentally changed the way I think and physically the way I live my life every day. Take it from me, from a person who always thought personal training was a waste of money. I would pay 3 times the amount knowing how my life has changed and how I have gotten better!

Routines are interchangeable for home and gym and accommodate all levels
At the recommendation of my Physical Therapist, I attended a seminar being sponsored by Spectrum Fitness. I learned a great deal about Mike's philosophy and approach toward overall fitness and well-being. Intrigued by the "myth busters" Mike shared that evening, I was excited to share my newly gained insight with a few friends and family. After an initial consultation, three of us formed a group and have been attending training sessions two to three times a week.
Working out in a mini-group promotes teamwork, accountability and mutual commitment. You find your motivation and support from one another and share the highs and lows that come with balancing lifestyles. The overall positive aspect is the camaraderie, the positive encouragement and the stress reduction that comes with reintroducing your "self" to a healthy lifestyle. The trainers are focused and knowledgeable, and the routines are interchangeable for home and gym and accommodate all levels. The nutritional aspect is our area of focus now in order to make simple changes that can fit into our lifestyles so we can achieve our collective goals. After just a few months, we are seeing results in the form of physical and psychological fitness.
As an added, unexpected benefit I have regained full mobility in my knee (partial tear of meniscus and ACL) long after the insurance sponsored P.T. sessions had ended.

Endless, boring hours on the treadmill was not working

I look as fit as I did before I had children in my mid 20’s
I am the healthiest I have been in a very long time, and I have Spectrum Fitness and it’s professional staff to thank for getting me back on the right track. I am 38, have 4 young children, work full time and have little time to devote to myself so, “fitness” got put on the back burner for a while. In the past, I have tried to eat healthy and fit in exercise when I could, but we all know that it is easy to get caught up in a cycle of; eating the leftover food from the kids plates, choosing laundry and chores over going out and exercising, being just too plain tired to do anything except the everyday functions of work and family life. Whenever I would start an exercise program it took up too much time and I would either gain the weight back or simply stop the routine after a while.
Over the years I have researched and tried many of the new, “fad” diets that come out on a regular basis, I have also tried different workout programs and joined gyms. Most of that resulted in frustration and kept me with the, “extra weight” that I couldn’t seem to shed. My mother told me about a seminar given by Michael Stare that addressed everything I have had frustration with in the past…myths about weight loss, fad diets, time constraints…After hearing what he had to say, I signed up the next week. I was curious and it seemed too good to be true. I had appointments with professional trainers that worked with my specific abilities and I saw changes almost immediately. I learned that “workouts” don’t have to consume your entire morning, night or afternoon. They taught me that I can use my body weight for strength training and not have to go out and buy expensive equipment or join a gym, I can get in a full workout in my own living room or yard all within a half hour. I learned that ten minutes of high intensity interval training burns more fat over a longer period of time than a 45 minute run at moderate pace, what a time saver! One of the trainers even gave me a tip on how I could utilize my children’s swing set for part of my strength training. I won’t say participating in my appointments didn’t take hard work and dedication on my part, but being guided by the trainers made it so much easier to get motivated.
Recently, I was able to travel to Wyoming and hike up to 10, 000 feet without feeling tired! Since then, I have been continuing with my workouts and high intensity training. I have lost 15 pounds, gained muscle tone and I look as fit as I did before I had children in my mid 20’s. I can keep up with my children and have made a promise to myself to keep on track with my health and fitness. The most important aspect of all is that I feel energized, healthy and strong. Thanks. You and Ortho Plus helped me rehab from several orthopedic setbacks over the past 3 years, including a lower back fusion, total hip replacement, shoulder reconstruction and knee surgery....and of course, a broken ankle.

I work out safely and overcome pain
I have a few miles on my tires and have some degenerative and arthritic issues. Because of Mike and the well rounded staff, not only personal trainers (physical therapists and nutritionalists) I have been able to work out safely on a regular basis. This is one investment you will not regret.
In September 2007, I suffered a nasty ankle sprain and was extremely disappointed that I could not dance flamenco for several months. In restrospect, the sprain was a blessing in disguise. In order to heal faster and strengthen my upper body muscles that were a constant source of pain, I was introduced to Michael Stare of Spectrum fitness.
The experience of training with him and the results has been absolutely phenomenal. My goal was, primarily, to become stronger without injuring my ankle or my left shoulder. In the past, any kind of upper body exercise would inflame a chronic neck pain that was a result of filming with heavy professional video cameras. But in six months, I can now lift 5 times more weight than I have ever been able to, WITHOUT ever injuring my upper back or my ankle.I think that this is the strongest I have ever been in the fastest amount of time.
Mike's knowledge of physical therapy is immensely valuable to strength training -- he knows exactly when I would feel tiredness and when my muscles were really at their limit. Three weeks ago, I went back to flamenco after an absence of 9 months. My teacher was amazed at how strong my footwork sounded. When he had us do some intricate technique individually, the whole class applauded at my attempt. No one was more surprised than I was -- my footwork had never been this strong and precise before.
Thanks to Mike's diligent training and meticulous supervision , my injured ankle feels strong, my flamenco footwork is precise and I can hold my camera steadily. I now workout without pain At 42 years old, my back pain was interfering not only with being able to strength train and do any cardio but with simply playing kickball with my children. As a former competitive body builder and someone who has worked out daily for over 20 years I was told I had a bulging disc and severe arthritis. I trained carefully took yoga and pilates classes, “stretched”, simplified my cardio routine and still had severe lower back pain.
I was referred to Michael Stare who discovered that I was lacking a very important component in my training “specific spinal stabilizer exercise”. After years of training as a former bodybuilder, I was lacking strength in many places but was strong in others which made my back issues worse, Because I had lower back issues I assumed I needed to work my “abs” to support my back; not true, that “ab” work was making my specific back pain worse.
With Mike’s background as a physical therapist, I believe he has something very unique to offer. Mike has given me simple but intense workout routines which focus on my specific needs adjusted to my individual time constraints.
Anyone who wants to make the most out of their workout or anyone starting out should connect with Michael; he is incredibly knowledgeable, enthusiastic and cares about his client’s success. He is a great reference whenever you need to change your workout, have a specific injury or questions and his fees are very reasonable.

We were talking about some recent advances I had made in my workouts, making some minor changes in my diet, and overall feeling pretty good about the progress I was making toward my fitness goals. I mentioned that the coming week would be a real test as my family and I were vacationing on the other cape (Cape Cod) for a week. There would surely be burgers and dogs, lobsters and steamers, and ice cream, snacks, and beers and plenty of things to do besides working out. As much as I was looking forward to a little R&R, I didn’t want to take a step backwards from my fitness goals.
The Spectrum Team did a real good job reminding me of the principles…wise (but not perfect) nutrition choices…Something is better than nothing when it comes to workouts (intensity and consistency are more important than the apparatus you have available)…rest is one of the most important factors. I have to admit, I enjoyed the heck out of my vacation. I had fun playing with my kids. I had fun working out (briefly but intensely). I pretty much ate what I wanted (avoiding only processed sugars). Predictably, I slept really well. I don’t think I have enjoyed a vacation that much ever.
It is easy to get confused by so much information out there, but the team at Spectrum always brings it back to the basics. Work out with intensity and build muscle. Eat whole foods, don’t diet. Rest and prepare to work out with intensity again later in the week.
This really hit home with me twice. One time was on Light House Beach in Chatham. I took a short walk to the beach by myself in the morning and did a really brief (only nine minutes) but really intense resistance workout with absolutely no apparatus (just my body weight). It was such a good work out and I was working so hard to recover between sets that a stranger stopped to ask if I was OK. I was more than OK, I was feeling great! Several minutes later, my family met me on the beach and we enjoyed the next couple hours enjoying the morning and swimming with the seals. The second time was when I returned home, weighed myself and discovered that I had not gained a pound. I thought about how well rested I was, how I had really not deprived my self of any of the good food available, and how well the Spectrum Team had prepared me to be happy living a healthy life. Allows me to care for my young grandchildren
During physical therapy at Orthopaedics Plus following shoulder surgery, I saw a poster in the lobby announcing a Spectrum program on fitness and weight loss. It hit a chord. I knew I needed a supervised, focused exercise program since trying to do it myself had put me into surgery. I attended the program, very much liked what I heard, and signed up that night.
The combination of personal training supervised by a physical therapist was particularly appealing. I have never regretted my decision. Corrective exercises, resistance training, and strengthening exercises have made a noticeable difference in my overall health and well-being, physically and mentally.
I am now able to squat and lift well over 60 pounds, in spite of a chronic back condition, which allows me to care for my young grandchildren.. Also, I can now do push-ups, even though I had shoulder surgery and was not able to fully use my arm before I started.I am still very much a work in progress and subscribe mightily to Mike’s BTN philosophy, but I’m getting there. I was in the best shape since my college soccer years. I had the opportunity to work with Mike while rehabilitating my surgically reconstructed ACL injury. Mike did a fantastic job of answering of all my questions and described the complex factors involved in my condition in a clear way, so that I felt confident and assured while rehabilitating my knee. Furthermore, it was clear that my surgeon had a high level of confidence in the care I was receiving from Mike. Mike sought to not only to restore my knee function, but also to condition me so that I would be less likely to suffer future knee problems. After finishing my rehabilitation with Mike, I felt like I was in the best shape since my college soccer years.
Recently, my son has been seeing Mike to care for his knee pain. Mike was able to diagnose a rare knee condition that was not readily apparent to my son’s pediatrician. I was a patient of Michael Stare after I tore my ACL in a ski accident in the spring of 2004. Michael was the physical therapist of choice who came highly recommended by my orthopedic surgeon, and was my therapist before and after the successful surgical repair of my knee.
I was delighted with the care I received at Orthopaedics Plus, and in particular with Mike Stare. He is the kind of professional whose extensive scope of knowledge evokes immediate confidence in his skills. His warm, caring personality and sense of humor made a sometimes grueling period an enjoyable one.
What impressed me most about Mike was the way he personalized each plan of care, adapting to changing abilities and setbacks. Mike treated me not like a “middle-aged mom” but as an individual who enjoyed an active lifestyle and who hoped to be back on the slopes before long.
Through the rehabilitation program he created for me, along with extensive education about injury prevention, I now enjoy golf, skiing, hiking, running and a power yoga practice.
